Antenatal Care

Appointments are included in routine doctors' surgeries, and our midwife, holds clinics on Tuesday mornings for your 1st antenatal booking appointment and Thursday 09:30am - 16:00pm for follow-up antenatal appointments.

Coronavirus Update:

To arrange a first booking appointment when you are over 7 weeks pregnant , please book your first appointment by going to https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/midwife-booking and completing the form. Ladies with Type 1 Diabetes should complete this form as when they discover that they are pregnant. 

A midwife will then be in contact within 5 working days to arrange your first appointment date.

Below is a brief layout of when you should be seen by the midwife and what you should expect to happen.

Booking (usually at 8-12 weeks) 1 hour appointment

Midwife will discuss:-

Healthy eating, smoking cessation, pelvic floor exercises, supplements,vaccinations, risk assessment and screening bloods will be taken.

  • 16 weeks - 20 minute appointments from now on
  • 24 weeksfrom now on your antenatal appointments will usually become more frequent. However, if your pregnancy is uncomplicated and you are in good health, you may not be seen as often as someone who needs to be more closely monitored.
  • Later visits are usually 20 mins. Your midwife or doctor will: 
    • check your urine and blood pressure
    • feel your abdomen (tummy) to check the baby's position
    • measure your uterus (womb) to check your baby's growth
    • listen to your baby's heartbeat if you want them to
  • You should then be seen at 28 weeks, 32 weeks, 36 weeks, 38 weeks, 39 weeks and then 40 weeks.
